Interior design Jestico + Whiles
Prague’s Jestico + Whiles studio combined modern design with traditional African and Asian pieces at Zuri...
creating a property that is both ecologically and socially sensitive. The multidisciplinary studio used natural and local materials, as well as making the most of Zanzibar’s heritage of craftsmanship: bungalows, villas, and communal spaces are characterized by artifacts from local markets, furniture of polished and exposed woods, and 1960s-style chairs, stools, and lamps.
Architecture Jestico + Whiles
The garden-like landscape, as designed by Ferdinand Leffler, resembles a traditional African village, with thatched roofs, palm trees, and greenery...
lending privacy to each Jestico + Whiles-designed bungalow and villa. Natural materials are abundant throughout, from the wooden beams used in the structures to the refined pieces of furniture that embody the overall African-chic visual identity. Many of the private terraces also play host to hammocks and sun loungers.

Food & Drink The world on a plate
Food & Drink The world on a plate
Experience a fusion of European, African, Arabic, and Indian cuisine, which create a rainbow of sensational flavors.
By mixing modern and traditional flavors, Zuri Zanzibar’s chef serves up food with a twist that allows guests to indulge in a new experience.
Sustainable Giving back
Ecology and sustainability are the central pillars of Zuri Zanzibar’s concept.
The hotel proudly carries out numerous socially responsible activities that touch on areas of water managements, environmental protection, conservation, and bettering the lives of locals through education programs and longterm local initiatives that improve the Zanzibari population’s daily life.
Sustainability Keeping an eye on our Conscious Hotel Principles
“Our philosophy is to connect with nature and the local community by focusing on educational, environmental, and waste management initiatives.”
Architecture
In harmony with the terrain, larger buildings were positioned on the flat top while smaller bungalows “float” to protect most of the original flora. Hundreds of local plants and trees were added and a spice garden accessible to guests was preserved. Coral stone from the foundation was reused in the construction and roofs are made from Tanzanian grass or wood shingles.
Waste
Items that are not needed are donated to local hospitals, veterinarians, and the community. The interiors feature furniture crafted from recycled sailboats. All kitchen scraps and wood and paper waste are composted. The hotel started the “Keep Kendwa Clean!” project with local waste management company Zanrec. Straws from natural materials and glass water bottles reduce the use of plastics.
Energy
Zuri Zanzibar uses LEDs, automatic sensor lighting in specific areas, and offers guests the option to choose the Evening Breeze cooling system over standard air conditioning, saving up to 75% energy.
Water
Water is purified using ozone technology—the first resort in East Africa to do so—and desalination plant systems, so the hotel does not use local village water sources. Water is mineralized by the BWT Aqua Mondo magnesium technologies and the water process goes from supply to disposal.
Culture
With their pack-to-give project, guests can donate items to local education and healthcare systems. The hotel has inventoried and conserved indigenous plants and introduced tropical plants to support wildlife. Established an English club that supports the Kilinidi school and rewards the best students with a Mnemba snorkeling trip. The Wimbi gift shop features local vendors.
Recreation
The hotel offers visits for guests to the local school, recycling shops, a zero-waste cooking class, non-motorized water sports, local tours, and regular Kendwa village clean-up drives.
Healthy Workplace
Zuri Zanzibar runs a schooling project with Jambiani Tourism Training Institute, where students work at Zuri after completing a two-year tourism and hospitality program, supported by monthly stipends. The hotel offers training for supervisors and leaders, personal development plans, and a clean water program.
Measure & Communication
The hotel shares news in its newsletter and has published a sustainability brochure. Before guests arrive, they receive an email with information about the pack-to-give program and a mindful checklist with tips on how to support sustainability efforts during their stay.
Products & Produce
Fruit and vegetables come from organic and small agricultural producers. Seafood is sourced from local fishermen who respect good fishing practices. Room amenities are organic and locally made in collaboration with the Mwani Zanzibar. Guests who purchase the Zuri water bottle support the local community directly.
