The Scholarship Campaign was started in 1987. The Scholarships are financed through a Scholarship Lottery and funding from the Optimist Club. The Scholarship Lottery was preceded by “the Condo Lottery” where a Ocean City Condo was the lottery prize and proceeds were applied to the Scholarships. The cost of real estate in Ocean City resulted in the Condo Lottery concept to be replaced by the current Cash Prize format.
The Youth Foundation was founded December 10, 1992 and is a not for profit organization under Section 501 C (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. The Youth Foundation is to organize and coordinate the Youth Foundation Scholarship Program and share in its administration with the Worcester County Board of Education.
City-Berlin Optimist Club Youth Foundation Scholarship Program believes in non-discrimination on the basis of race, religion origin or family status in both principle and practice.
The Scholarship Lottery Campaign is kicked off at the Ocean City Sunfest in September and concludes at the OC-Berlin sponsored Seaside Boat Show in February. The Campaign is based on 3 mailings that occur every other month (Sep/Nov/Jan) to participants who have responded in the preceding 5 years. Advertisements are issued at the campaign kickoff and prior to the Holidays. Beginning in 2008, the Campaign includes the sale of Lottery Tickets over the internet.
